 Once there were 565 Princes who ruled 1/3 of India. They lived lives of splendour & medieval intrigue until, in the early 1970s, Indira Ghandi removed their titles & taxed them. Today they flourish among their crumbling palaces, rare exotic blooms - vivid reminders of a legendary past. Rudyard Kipling said that God created Princes so that mankind could have a spectacle of jewels & marble palaces. Their foibles & eccentricities were equally lavish: like the Nizam of Hyderabad's household of 11000 servants, 38 spent their time dusting chandeliers; the others did nothing but grind walnuts; or the Maharajah of Gwalior's silver train which carried drinks around the dining table & whistled when it came to a halt. Today they're ambassadors, politicians, industrialists & conservationists. |
