Additional information
|
Textile Recycling originated in the Yorkshire Dales about 200 years ago. These days the Rag & Bone men are textile reclamation businesses, which supply collected textiles and shoes for re-use, providing an essential economic source of clothing for developing economies. Material not suitable for re-use is recycled, providing wiper cloths, Flock for the furniture & bedding industries and fibres to be re-claimed to make new garments.
It is estimated that more than one million tonnes of textiles are thrown away each year, with most of this coming from household sources. Textiles make up about 3% by weight of a household bin. At least 50% of the textiles we throw away are recyclable, however the proportion of textiles re-used or recycled annually in the UK is only around 25%
